Denali Highway (AK-8) : The Denali Highway was so named because before the existence of the Parks Highway, it was the only road access to Denali, the National Park.  It ran from Paxson, on the Richardson Highway, to the little town of Cantwell on the Alaska Railroad, then continued on to the park.  Now it is just a 135 mile road, all but 22 miles gravel, that connects the small communities of Paxson and Cantwell.  The Parks Highway follows (for the most part) the old right-of-way from Cantwell to the park entrance.
