First Trip All The Way - July 2004 : The Haul Road or, more correctly, the Dalton Highway, is a route across a wide variety of terrain starting about 80 miles northwest of Fairbanks and terminating at Deadhorse - an industrial area that exists to serve the oilfields in the area. May 2007 : A few days after Memorial Day, Brian Roberts and I headed north from Glennallen in order for Brian to complete his ride from Key West to Deadhorse - all within a six day time frame. He succeeded in accomplishing that goal.

September 2007 - Haul Road 1000 : After riding to Deadhorse (aka Prudhoe Bay) at the end of May, a ride was conceived that would consist of riding from North Pole, Alaska to Deadhorse, then back to North Pole, a distance of just over 1000 miles - all within 24 hours. With such a schedule there was little time for taking photos, so most of these were to and from the starting/ending point at North Pole.

August 2008 : Due for another trip to Deadhorse, when I announced on the ADVRider forum that I was making the trek, several others made arrangements to go at the same time. The result was the most enjoyable trip yet, thanks to companions who were having a great time, and got on with each other as though we were all long time friends.

September 2008 : Finally got away from work on the 21st of September. Weather forecasts are pretty dismal for the Haul Road north of Atigun Pass, but this is to be an exploratory trip to see just how late it can be ridden. I found out.

July 4, 2009 : Not a lot of photos taken on this ride. It was intended from the get-go to be an Iron Butt Association Bun Burner 1500, that is, 1500 miles in 36 hours. Leaving home around 10 PM after being up and working for 14 hours, it was a pleasant enough ride until the engine seized 168 miles north of Coldfoot as I was headed to Deadhorse. A broken piston (as I found out months later) was causing the engine to burn a lot of oil, and it had run almost dry. Fortunately, a spare quart added to the crankcase was enough to get the bike to Deadhorse, where another gallon was purchased to get us back home. A spill in the loose gravel as I was passing some very slow riders cost a little more time, but did no damage to bike or rider. Finally had to pull over for a brief nap back down around Fairbanks, and again south of Delta Junction. The bike couldn't make top speed, so it was really close, finishing the 1520 miles in 35 hours and 56 minutes.
