On the afternoon of November 3, 2002 a 7.9 earthquake rocked a large portion of Interior Alaska, and extended all the way into the Yukon Territory. Damage was widespread, and extensive in some places. The sparse population helped to keep it from being a major disaster in terms of loss of life.

A neighbor's wood shop: A heavy drill press has fallen onto a power hacksaw, breaking parts on both.
The same neighbor's pantry, in more than a little disarray.
The pavement at Mile 1 on the Nabesna Road, near the Slana River Bridge, cracked as the fill tried to settle in two directions.
The Tok Cut-Off from MP 62 to MP 92 was nearly impassable, with major damage near Mentasta Pass, and the road moving sideways about 15 feet near the road to Mentasta Village.
Once the road was opened up again, traffic was allowed through at intervals, with a pilot car leading the way.
Apparently it makes them sleepy. (Grin)
This photo, taken 4/3/06, shows how the highway, which used to run straight to the distant curve, was relocated over 15' as two parts of Alaska shifted in relation to one another.
