Watson Lake signposts - before they became a "forest". This is about 1/3 of the total, right next to the highway on the edge of a long pull-out.
Not really a part of the Alaska Hwy, these are some hills along the John Hart Hwy between Prince George and Dawson Creek, B.C.
June 1965, somewhere in the Yukon: When the Alcan was virtually all gravel, it was a good idea to carry a spare tire... or 5. The '57 Ford 1/2 ton that brought me home after my discharge from the Army.
June 1975: How we did it back then. The '71 Pinto all prepared for a drive to Seattle and back. First ever highway trip for the wife and daughter - two diminutive people (5' 1/4" & 5' 3") in a diminutive compact. All had a great trip, and the Pinto did fine through Alcan construction where RV's were getting towed by dozers.
June 1975: Wife and 14-year old daughter at their gas stop in Glennallen (and I didn't know how to spell it back then, nor did I dream that some day I would be living within a block of this spot) on the way to Haines to catch the ferry to Juneau for the first visit on what ended up being a 5000 mile round trip to Seattle from Houston, Alaska. This was the first long trip either had made without me behind the wheel.
July 1976: The brand new '76 Ford Club Wagon Chateau being driven home from Ohio, after a few miles of Alcan mud. Yep - they all ended up looking like that, except in the winter.
June 1965 - headed north. Not sure which lodge this is, can only read "...River Esso Service" on the roof. Lots of Lynden rigs like this on the highway back then, a "Drom Box" on the tractor, pulling a 40' trailer.
